Yoga exercise focuses first on the health of the spine. The spinal column houses the centre of the nervous system, the telegraphic system of the body. As a direct extension of the brain, the healthy spine aids in the health of the whole body. By maintaining the spine’s flexibility and strength through proper exercise, circulation is increased, the nerves are ensured their supply of nutrients and oxygen, and the body retains its youthful state.

Asanas work on all the various systems of the body, creating suppleness in the spine and joints and toning the muscles, glands, and internal organs. Though at first it will be the physical experience of the postures that affects you most strongly, as you progress you will grow more and more aware of the flow of prana, the vital energy, and of the importance of correct breathing – pranayama.
