Yoga and Vedanta philosophy

In this course, we will use the Bhagavad Gita text as a background to discuss the following topics from the tradition of Vedanta:
-Karma Yoga and the philosophy of Karma and Reincarnation
-Jnana Yoga and the concept of Brahman
-Mantra and Sacrifice
Pre-requisite: Please familiarize yourself with the Bhagavad Gita and read the text before the start of the course (Bhagavad Gita books are available at the Sivananda Yoga Center; you can order them online or at the Centre).
Teacher: Maheswari has been practicing Yoga since an early age. She has been teaching Yoga and Vedanta courses for over twenty years. Maheswari has knowledge and an innate ability to connect with students and help them gain insights into the sacred teachings of this tradition.

Deepen your practice with an engaging three-hour class that combines practice and theory, taught by special visiting teacher Mayavan. Suitable for intermediate students, this class is an opportunity to challenge yourself and go further in your practice. And don’t worry: the time flies by! Musician: Narada (Timmy Martin Sarker) is a Bangladeshi-Canadian vocalist and guitarist. His healing music infuses ancient Sanskrit chanting into contemporary rhythms, creating a unique brand of conscious music that uplifts and inspires. Narada’s music closely follows the Kirtan genre, allowing the audience to experience a deep state of relaxation and rejuvenation by connecting with his music.
Narada is heavily influenced and inspired by classical Indian music and the Eastern philosophy of meditation. He creates soulful, vibrant musical pieces by incorporating the knowledge acquired from these age-old traditions. Before the pandemic, Narada extensively travelled and performed in various cities in Canada (Toronto, Montreal, Halifax, Saint John’s) and internationally (U.S.A., India, Colombia) to hone his skills and connect with his audience.
Over the past three years, Narada has released 12 soundtracks under the album Chants of Ecstasy. He is currently working on his next album, collaborating with musicians across the globe. Narada has also been conducting concerts for Canadian and international audiences.

Japanese Cooking Workshop
with Nalini
Saturday, February 15th, 1.30pm-4.30pm, $65
Japanese food is renowned for its simplicity and sense of aesthetics. The Japanese population is one with the highest life expectancy, which research linked to the Japanese diet. There are numerous health benefits associated with a traditional Japanese diet that is rich in antioxidants, healthy bacteria and minerals. The food is served in small portions with many dishes. Natural flavours are emphasized, and food is minimally processed.
We will introduce you to some classics, such as spring roles, miso soup and roasted green tea. The food is served in Ryokans, Japanese traditional inns.
Bring your aprons and chopsticks!
Teacher: Nalini has long time yoga practitioner and staff at the Sivananda yoga Center. She is originally from Japan and will bring her expertise to all yogis in order to craft meals that are balanced and nutritious.

Ayurvedic Cooking Workshop
Saturday, March 29th; 1:30 – 4:30 pm, $75
Participants will learn how to use shad rasa – six tastes, the most important aspect of Ayurvedic nutrition and how to incorporate many tastes in one meal. Balanced dish includes right amount of each taste: sweet, sour, salty, pungent, bitter and astringent, which helps achieve optimum health and vitality.
To stay balanced and aligned with nature’s seasonal changes, we will learn how to cook balance meal with all six tastes and all required balance nutrients with traditional highly recommended recipes in Ayurveda.
Menus will cover Tri-Doshic recipes for all body types which will be cooked with all healing herbs and spices.
