A work-study program designed for teenagers aged 15-17 and adapted to their needs and interests to inspire, empower and establish a deeper sense of self-respect and self-discipline so they can live a more balanced and fulfilled life. This two-week work study program is designed to help young people participate in ashram life. They will follow the ashram schedule and enjoy the benefits of yoga classes and meditation, while working in the karma yoga (selfless service) program under the supervision of senior ashram staff. The ashram schedule is adapted to meet the physiological and psychological needs of this age group. Weekly outings and daily group meetings are incorporated into the program. Students are expected to take part in all activities and are guided to work in the spirit of cooperation and mutual respect.
Daily schedule :
Two week program daily schedule:
7 am: Wake up
7:30 am: Staff meeting
8-10 am: Yoga Class
10 am: Vegetarian Brunch
11-3.30 pm: Karma Yoga (selfless service)
1.30 pm: Snack
4-5 pm: Teen Meeting (workshop, group activity, discussion)
5-6 pm: Rest and Showers
6 pm: Vegetarian Dinner
8 pm: Satsang (guided meditation, group chanting and a spiritual development talk) or silent walk
10 pm: Lights Out
Saraswati is a long time staff of the Sivananda organization and currently the director of the SYVC in Toronto. She has been serving as a director of the Kids Yoga Camp for many years. She has also developed Teen karma yoga programme as well as many community-based programs. including “From Yoga Mat to Peaceful Classroom” , program for Toronto District School Board. Saraswati is also a certified Child and Youth Counsellor and has worked enthusiastically with individuals and groups on mental health, substance abuse and social issues, within different settings, most recently at Toronto East General Hospital, Hincks Dellcrest youth mental health center and “Sketch” (agency for street involved and homeless youth).
