Course Description

Introduction to Ayurveda (Dr. Vishnu)

Ayurveda is the traditional healing system of the Vedic culture from India. It is said to be 2000 to 5000 years old; therefore, it has stood the test of time. Ayurveda is a Sanskrit word that translates as “the wisdom of life” or “the knowledge of longevity.” In this lecture, we will introduce some basic concepts of Ayurveda.

Discover your Ayurvedic Constitution (Dr. Sonal Bhatt)

Learn about your body and mind’s personality through the Ayurvedic perspective on the three Doshas and Gunas. Prakriti, a Sanskrit word meaning ‘nature, ‘creativity,’ or ‘the first creation,’ is the physical and psychological constitution of an individual determined by three Doshas (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha) and three Gunas (Tamas, Rajas, and Sattva). In this lecture, we will discuss the composition of the three Doshas and Gunas and how the balance between them defines an individual’s physical, mental, psychological, and spiritual state.

The Importance of Agni/Digestive Fire (Dr. Vishnu)

The Ayurvedic concept of digestive fire, or agni, is critically important to our overall health. Agni is the force of intelligence within each cell, each tissue, and every system within the body. In this way, agni is the gatekeeper of life. The majority of disease is the result of a malfunctioning agni and we will explore how this may manifest in our own lives in this interactive workshop.

The Importance of Panchakarma/Cleansing Treatments (Dr. Vishnu)

The miracle of the human body is that it has a natural healing intelligence, which is capable of constantly rejuvenating itself. However, when we have a doshic imbalance and weakened digestive system, toxic impurities can form and block body’s body’s natural capacity to heal. To remedy this situation, we use Panchakarma (various cleansing treatments). Through these processes, the body is purified of foreign substances, freeing it to return to its restorative state. Participants will be able to ask questions and to further learn about these treatments.

Ayurvedic Nutrition and Cooking Workshop for Self- Healing (Dr. Sonal Bhatt)

Ayurveda, the ancient healing science of longevity, teaches us that food plays an important role in a healthy life and makes a vital contribution to continued good health. Learn how to cook well-balanced, nutritious  tri-doshic recipes based on Ayurvedic principles and made from grains, beans, vegetables, fruits, seeds, dairy products, spices and herbs.

Ayurveda promotes a holistic approach to health by creating harmony between the body and mind. In these classes, we will look at the 12 basic asanas (postures) from an Ayurvedic perspective to offer a balanced practice.
